Sketching Spring Flowers

Clockwise from top: trout lily, dandelion, spring beauty. All three little sketches were drawn in pen on what had been scrap paper.

Scrap paper in various sizes and colors fills a drawer in my studio space. They are remnants of larger pieces of paper that needed to be cut for different art projects. I keep them because I am an artist and know that I will come up with creative ways to use them. And I do.

I brought a few small square pieces of paper of a warm hue and a few pens outside where spring flowers are beginning to bloom all over the place. To the tune of birds and toads and alongside ants and bees, I sketched three floral specimens: spring beauty, trout lily, and dandelion.

I delighted in representing these charms of the spring landscape in pen. The warm day on which these sketches were drawn was followed by a touch of snow two days later. The flowers persist, however. Those who bloom in spring are not as delicate as they seem.
