Starting the Day

A squirrel took in the sights from the roof of a wood duck nest box that it had exited that morning. (Tip: Set up multiple nest boxes to please the squirrels and the wood ducks.)

The frosty morning softened as the sun made its way around each corner of tree branch and tree trunk. Soaking up this new warmth from the entrance of a wood duck nest box was a squirrel who peeked its head out. Sunshine landing on its face, the squirrel closed its eyes and reopened them halfway. Eventually it climbed out of the box and onto the roof. A long session of scratching and grooming began. It was time to wake up.

Movement in the distance caught the squirrel’s attention. On the ground, a woodchuck appeared under an archway created by a tree that had snapped in half. The woodchuck hurried forward and stopped suddenly. Then it hurried some more and stopped again. Standing on its hind legs, the woodchuck paused for a couple of moments and looked ahead. After gathering that it was safe to proceed, the woodchuck rushed back to its den under a shed.

The woodchuck was an early riser. It was already heading back to its den as the squirrel was still preparing to leave its own home.

The squirrel launched itself from the roof of the nest box and onto a nearby tree. Leaping from one tree to the next, the squirrel took off and officially started its day. Then another squirrel peeked its head out of the nest box. It made its way onto the roof where it also scratched and groomed. But after pausing on the roof in the sunshine for a while and looking around, the second squirrel climbed back into the box. It was too early.
